Treatment Programs

KAL Orthoses always implements stretching and strengthening programs to patient treatment. Muscular imbalances can significantly decrease patient success, and thus prolong their ability to return to physical activity. Treatment plans are implemented according to patient conditions.

The following are samples of exercises in these educational treatment programs.

Sample strengthening exercise 1: Ankle Theraband Inversion

Start of movement                 End of movement

Sit on the ground with leg fully straightened. Attach one end of the band to a sturdy object and the other end at the top of your foot just before the toes. Keeping your kneecap pointed to the ceiling (limiting the rotation at the hip), slowly move your foot and ankle inwards against the resistance band, as far as possible, and comfortably without pain. Repeat 3 sets of 15 repetitions.

Sample strengthening exercise 2: Quad Can

Start of movement              End of movement

This is a simple exercise that allows you to start straightening your leg and strengthening your quadriceps after an acute injury. Lying or sitting on the ground/bed, place a can (wrap the can in a towel if necessary) underneath your knee. Slowly flex your quads and straighten your leg, holding the contraction for 2 counts. Then slowly return to the stating position. When pain is reduced or absent, you can increase intensity by adding ankle weights. Complete 3 sets of 15 repetitions.

Icing for Plantar Fasciitis

Icing should be done immediately following activity and/or a full work day. Have a 2L bottle, filled with water, handy in the freezer. The same exercise performed to break down scar tissue, will be done with the ice. Roll the 2L bottle under the foot, from the heel to the ball of the foot. Icing for 10 minutes is all that’s needed. This can be repeated as desired, with a minimum of 10 minutes between icing bouts.

Note: If you have a systemic disease or condition that decreases sensation or blood flow, please consult your physician before attempting to ice.
